October 12 - 17, 2014: Earth Science
The week was kicked off with the "Geology Road Rally;" a geological scavenger hunt on wheels. Participants received a list of clues for interesting geological localities. The hunt began by registering at Warnock Science Building at 10am. During this event participants were able to learn about interesting areas along the Alpine - Fort Davis - Marfa triangle. No participants returned information so no official winners were announced.
Monday, October 13th was Earth Science Literacy Day. The club celebrated by posting some of their favorite Earth Science books on Facebook. Fans of the Sul Ross Geology Club page were also invited to share their favorites with the public.
Thursday, October 16th was Geoscience for Everyone Day! The National Weather Service of Midland agreed to host a special SKYWARN training event. 16 people were in attendance. The training took place at Warnock Science Building, Room 201, 7:00pm.
Friday, October 17th was Geologic Map Day. Folks joined the club and Museum of Big Bend Historian and Curator of Collections, Matthew Walter for a special presentation. They were able to learn about and see Texas' first Geologic Map at 3:00pm in Warnock Science Building, Room 201. This is a recent acquisition, and a very interesting piece of history!
